Driven home by Mosquitoes

Tall Encyclia (Encyclia altissima)

The field trail to Garden Pond, Lorimers

The mosquitoes at Bambarra didn’t seem to be too bad so we decided to try walking the Garden Pond Field Road at Lorimers.  Since then we have learnt that if Middle Caicos can be bad for Mosquitos then Lorimers has a reputation for being the worst place on Middle Caicos.  We covered ourselves in Mosi-guard and tried the route, cutlasses at the ready.  We made it as far as Garden Pond South where the path became more overgrown and by which time the mosquitos were beginning to find those small patches of untreated skin.  Time to retreat.  We’ll try again when the mosquito numbers diminish again.

The tall encyclia orchids are just coming out into flower, they will be an amazing sight along this path in a week or two.

What is the ecological purpose of mosquitos? Apart from annoying people, that is. That orchid is gorgeous.
