Heralding Spring

Frogs at St Nicholas Park, Gosforth

Another frog!

So a few days of milder weather arrive and spring is here: the frogs think so anyway.  The pond outside the Northumberland Wildlife Trust offices in Gosforth (Newcastle upon Tyne) has filled with frogs and their spawn.  I may have missed this winter but it was very cold before and around Christmas, since then it has settled to more normal British winter temperatures.  It seems that the frogs are a couple of weeks earlier than last year, when the cold came a bit later but it’s a few weeks behind what we had begun to think of as normal.  During our run of mild winters early February was becoming the norm for frog mayhem.  Unless winter makes a sudden return we can expect a few weeks of amphibian madness then peace will descend again.  The toads come a little later in the year.
